Jesus, Our Kinsman-Redeemer

(Ome: Hey fruitful ones! I’m here with the sermon notes from Pastor Prince’s sermon two weeks ago.

I really love what the Lord shared through Pastor, that Jesus is not satisfied with being one of our “relatives”. He wants to be the “relative”. I really like what Pastor shared that He wants to be the source of our help, not just one of the sources. Beloveds, I would like to encourage you, including myself, to trust in Him. Y’know, our hands are too small, and every man’s hand is too short, but He is able to supply you the help that you want, and He loves you, so it is His delight to, but let your trust be in Him. I also love the exposition of what it means when Jesus is our Redeemer. It means that He buys back what we have lost, for us. I especially love the part that He buys back for us things that we have lost, even those that we have lost through our mistakes. I find comfort in that, because we lose a lot of things by our own mistakes, be it study time, a few marks in study. He is able to redeem your module, your semester!

So as you can see, I was really blessed by these two powerful points, so I’ll let you go ahead and read. Be blessed by the notes and have a blessed recess week, knowing that as you rest in Him, your kinsman-redeemer will not rest, but stand up and work on your behalf!)

5 February 2012 Sunday Service

Preached by Pastor Prince

3rd Service

Verses from the sermon:

Romans 4:13

13For the promise that he would be the heir of the world was not to Abraham or to his seed through the law, but through the righteousness of faith.

Ruth 2:20

20Then Naomi said to her daughter-in-law, “Blessed be he of the LORD, who has not forsaken His kindness to the living and the dead!” And Naomi said to her, “This man is a relation of ours, one of our close relatives.”

Hebrews 13:12

12Therefore Jesus also, that He might sanctify the people with His own blood, suffered outside the gate.

Romans 3:21-22

21But now the righteousness of God apart from the law is revealed, being witnessed by the Law and the Prophets, 22even the righteousness of God, through faith in Jesus Christ, to all and on all who believe. For there is no difference;

Deuteronomy 23:3

3“An Ammonite or Moabite shall not enter the assembly of the LORD; even to the tenth generation none of his descendants shall enter the assembly of the LORD forever,

Matthew 1:1-6

1The book of the genealogy of Jesus Christ, the Son of David, the Son of Abraham: 2Abraham begot Isaac, Isaac begot Jacob, and Jacob begot Judah and his brothers. 3Judah begot Perez and Zerah by Tamar, Perez begot Hezron, and Hezron begot Ram. 4Ram begot Amminadab, Amminadab begot Nahshon, and Nahshon begot Salmon. 5Salmon begot Boaz by Rahab, Boaz begot Obed by Ruth, Obed begot Jesse, 6and Jesse begot David the king. David the king begot Solomon by her who had been the wife of Uriah.

Romans 7:1-6

1Or do you not know, brethren (for I speak to those who know the law), that the law has dominion over a man as long as he lives? 2For the woman who has a husband is bound by the law to her husband as long as he lives. But if the husband dies, she is released from the law of her husband. 3So then if, while her husband lives, she marries another man, she will be called an adulteress; but if her husband dies, she is free from that law, so that she is no adulteress, though she has married another man. 4Therefore, my brethren, you also have become dead to the law through the body of Christ, that you may be married to another–to Him who was raised from the dead, that we should bear fruit to God. 5For when we were in the flesh, the sinful passions which were aroused by the law were at work in our members to bear fruit to death. 6But now we have been delivered from the law, having died to what we were held by, so that we should serve in the newness of the Spirit and not in the oldness of the letter.

Key take-home points:

  • When Naomi heard from Ruth that she ran into Boaz, Naomi said that Boaz was one of “our close relatives”. Jesus is not satisfied with being be one of your “relatives”. He wants to be the one and only “relative” of yours. That is why, just like Boaz, who offered the closer relative to redeem Ruth first, Jesus allowed the law to come first, to see if it can be our source of justification. Only when we see that the law has no power to redeem, the law cannot justify us, then He steps in and be our Redeemer. (1,500 years after the giving of the law. That’s 1,500 of trying to keep the law, and none succeeded. Strangely, some people still don’t know today that the law cannot justify them!) This beautiful truth applies in our walk as well. As long as you see Jesus as one of the sources of help, He will allow you to be frustrated running after all kinds of sources, until He is the only help left standing, then He will show Himself to be a mighty Helper and Redeemer.
  • Boaz was Ruth’s kinsman-redeemer. An eligible kinsman-redeemer (a relative who is able to and willing) buys back all the land and belongings that were sold away, be it due to poverty or other reasons. Today, Jesus is your redeemer. He is the One who buys back what you have lost. If you have lost something, even through your own fault, Jesus can redeem it for you. Let me say that again: even if the loss is due to your own fault, lost time due to procrastination, lost money because of reckless spending, lost child because of bad relationship with your child, broken heart from a bad relationship, He can redeem for you what you have lost. In executing his duty as your kinsman-redeemer, Jesus has brought back all that you have lost and restored to you. That’s what it means to have Him as your Redeemer!
  • Good things, wonderful things happen when you are at Jesus’ feet. To fall at Jesus’ feet is to worship Him, to make Him big in your life and yourself small. A lot of times, we are just too prim and proper, too educated to be at Jesus’ feet. We don’t fall at other people’s feet, understandably, but this is Jesus! The place of being at His feet, the place of humility, is the place of receiving. When we humble ourselves and worship Him, we receive from Him.
